The tremendous power of late transition metal catalyzed processes to promote reactions at relatively unreactive carbon centers via C-H and C=C bond activation has transformed organic synthesis. The scarcity and cost of the most commonly used late transition metals has motivated a search for more sustainable alternatives. In this talk, the conceptualization and development of a new class of selenium catalysts for the C-H amination of alkenes and alkynes will be described. These metal-free catalyst systems offer unique regio- and stereoselectivity for C-N bond formation in a variety of complex substrates using inexpensive phosphine selenide and selenourea catalysts. The development of this catalytic system, and the key electronic and steric elements responsible for the observed selectivity will be discussed.
