Urbanization increases the density of humans and infrastructure while increasing the likelihood of bioterrorist attacks, like aerosol dispensation of spores. Bioterrorism decontamination needs to be precise and effective. Bacillus atrophaeus (formerly B. subtilis var. niger and B. globigii) spores were used as surrogate to study the fate and transport of the biological agent B. anthracis spores in a permeable interlocking concrete pavers system. The 380 m2 parking lot was seven years old, had a 2.76 hydraulic loading ratio, and clogged at the surface towards the downstream end. The 37 m2downstream section of the pavers was inoculated with B. atrophaeus and then washed off at an average rate of 0.46+-0.067 L/s to simulate emergency management decontamination in a series of six tests. Restorative maintenance was performed between the first three and the last three tests increasing the average surface infiltration rates nearly 30-fold from 438.6+-23.5 mm/hr to 13,219.9+-9.2 mm/hr. Before restoration, the first three tests only produced surface overflow with a minimum log reduction of 1.53 of the test specific inoculum mass (7.0e10 CFU). Underdrain flow occurred for one storm pre-maintenance. After restoration, the last three tests produced no surface overflow and instead produced underdrain flow with a minimum log reduction of 3.72 of the test specific inoculum mass (8.0e10 CFU). During test five, a leak was discovered between the drop inlet and the reinforced concrete outlet pipe. The leak was quantified for test six, and it yielded a 1.72 log reduction of the test specific inoculum mass (3.35e10 CFU).
