In the next 50 years, the world will begin to see the extreme effects of climate change. Intense changes in climate will impact the design of piping systems. Increased water runoff will displace soil. Global temperature changes will cause pipes to expand. As climate change occurs, water quality and piping design will be affected. Increased standing water will encourage bacterial growth and algae in pipelines. Civil engineers must design for additional geographical concerns, including changing soil content. Piping design must take new biological constraints into account as the global climate continues to change. Materials, detection, and design will be critical for the future of effective and reliable piping systems. As the planet changes, so will the future of piping design.

The Future of Infrastructure Amid Climate Change
