Bacteria oxidize and reduce small organic molecules for various purposes. By chemically altering small organic molecules, bacteria can alter the molecular environment in which they live. In the case of glucose, lactobacillus anaerobically produces lactic acid (lactic acid fermentation) and/or ethanol and CO<sub>2 </sub>(ethanol fermentation). Additionally, lactobacillus has other enzymes such as peroxidases that can also oxidize organic molecules. The purpose of this study is to determine if the hollow fiber bioreactor can be used to evaluate if and how organic molecules are oxidized in a bacterial environment.
