Helical polymers can be used to mimic enzymes and have shown promising signs of possessing antibacterial properties. Many scaffolds of synthetic polymers can achieve this helical shape, one of which is a meta-substituted poly(arylene ethynylene) (m-PAE). We are interested in studying simple alkyl-substituted m-PAEs. We will present our synthesis of the alkyl-substituted monomers and preliminary polymerization results.
