The Liquid Sunlight Alliance (LiSA) is working to establish the science principles by which assemblies of microenvironments can directly generate liquid fuels from sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide. LiSA is addressing the liquid solar fuels challenges of performance and durability by developing the science needed to create microenvironments and assemble them into solar fuels systems. This requires understanding of the complex interplay of transferred electrons, protons, and reactants needed for coupling of microenvironments. In its third year of operation, LiSA is transitioning to Phase II of its three project phases, which has focused on design of specific coupled microenvironments as testbeds, and on science advances that are needed to facilitate such coupling in tandem or cascade reactions to enable multicarbon product generation from CO<sub>2</sub>.  I will describe specific examples of such advances, including i) factors that control product selectivity at semiconductor photocathode surfaces and ii) design of a solar-driven thermocatalytic reaction environment for synthesis of multicarbon products.
