Heteroaryl compounds are important molecules within the medical community which are known for their extensive application in breast cancer research. Our class, which utilized a Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) model, studied the molecule tropinone (I80) and its heteroaryl derivatives. Using techniques and equipment such as microwave irradiation, MPLC, NMR and Craig tubes, we were able to synthesize and purify compound 2-(isoquinolin-4-yl)-8-methyl-8-azabicyclo[3.2.1]octan-3-one (I80-H12) from tropinone and 4-bromoisoquinoline. The optimized reaction conditions were NaOtBu base, XPhosPd Gen 4, toluene, microwave irradiation, 180°C, 30 minutes. The results from this study for compound I80-H12 can be used and further studied for breast cancer research as an aromatase inhibitor that can possibly stop or halt the progress of breast cancer in many across the country and world.
