β, β’-functionalized and π-extended porphyrins represent large aromatic systems which give rise to unique photophysical and optoelectronic properties. These properties can be tuned by altering the size and type of aromatic systems fused through the β, β’ positions of porphyrin. Pentacenes and higher acenes have inherent optical and electronic properties that make them highly desirable in the field of organic electronics. However, higher acenes notoriously suffer from low stability and solubility and are the current bottlenecks in this research area. Our research group has revealed that there is a dramatic increase in stability of the acene when fused to the β-positions of Ni(II) porphyrin. This research is focused on extending and tuning the aromaticity of the porphyrin through fusion of groups such as acenaphthene to the β, β’ positions. This presentation covers the synthesis, characterization, and spectral analysis of a series of acenaphthene-fused porphyrins.
