The ethylene oxide (EO) selectivity is increased from ~50 to 90+% by the use of promoters such as Cl, Re and Cs. In spite of the important role of the promoters, surface studies investigating promoted Ag/α-Al2O3 catalysts under reaction conditions are still absent. In this presentation, the nature and roles of the promoters during ethylene oxidation by Ag/α-Al2O3 will be examined with application of cutting-edge spectroscopy (Near Ambient Pressure (NAP)-XPS, High Sensitivity-Low Energy Ion Scattering (HS-LEIS), Raman, TPSR and UV-vis spectroscopy) and microscopy (High-Angle Annular Dark-Field - Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (HAADF-STEM)). The promoters are found to affect sintering of the supported Ag particles, number of active sites and the relative kinetics of the selective and unselective reaction pathways. The presentation will show the interplay between the promoters and their synergistic interacts that increase the EO selectivity.
