We have developed a web-based version of Organic Reaction Animations (webORA), which is a teaching tool for organic chemistry courses. It is software that is an upgraded and more accurate version of the original Organic Reaction Animations (ORA). WebORA is designed as a template for an application that can be used on smartphones (iORA). We have data from our first round of assessments of webORA. Students at four institutions have signed on to participate in the assessment process. The study compares use of the new teaching tool with standard, equal time-on-task for learning the SN2 reaction. We have collected data from the students that allows us to evaluate their 3D visualization skills (Purdue Spatial Visualization Test - Rotation). After using the webORA tool we administered a quiz. We have quiz results for the users and non-users, and attitudinal surveys for both groups. The intent is to show that the webORA animations are an effective teaching tool for students, particularly for those who are challenged with spatial visualization.
