Nanoparticles are small particles consisting of only several to a couple hundred atoms that display unique physiochemical properties that their bulk materials do not display. Gold nanoparticles in particular have shown a rise of interest due to their unique molecular behavior and have low reactivity due to lanthanide contraction that allow for bio-medical applications. Magnetic atoms, such as cobalt, display high coercivity due to single magnetic domains that is strongly sought out for in applications such as computing and possibly quantum computing. As nanoparticles decrease in sizes to 2 nm or less, they are labeled as nanoclusters and begin to display further unique physiochemical properties as they approach a more atomic scale/structure. Gold nanoclusters lose LSPR properties and begin to display strong photoluminescence caused by transmission between the HOMO-LUMO gaps of Kohn-Sham orbitals by discrete energy levels based upon the quantum confinement of the nanoclusters electron cloud within the cluster.<br/>This quantum confinement manipulates and plays a further key role in magnetic nanoclusters due to increasing the coercivity used in normal computing, but also by initialing qubit states of bound electron-hole pairs that display potential development in quantum computing. Both molecular (gold) nanoclusters and magnetic (cobalt doped) nanoclusters strongly depend upon their own structures, shape, and sizes to display these unique optical and magnetic properties.<br/>Optically the two elements can dampen or enhance the photoluminescence of the nanoparticles for further use in medical/instrumental applications, but magnetically it presents the possibility of higher resistance against the superparamagnetic effect that many nano-sized magnetic materials face as they approach smaller sizes. These nanoclusters are required to be characterized to identify their potential properties and reproducibility within a lab environment. Details of the synthesis and characterization will be presented. Instrumentation of a UV-vis spectrophotometer an NMR instrument and TSEM are utilized in order to identify characteristics in the structural synthesis of the doped clusters. Other instruments such as a fluorometer and voltammetry (with the usage of a silver-based electrochemical cell) are employed to characterize physiochemical properties such as quantum yield and band gap width.
