The extension of Lewis’ concept from atoms to molecules, now to covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are porous, crystalline, 2- or 3-dimensional polymers with diverse applications in heavy metal separations, gas storage and electrocatalysis. The important aspect of COFs is that they are designable geometrically and dimensionally based on the building blocks. The assembly of COFs involves dynamic covalent bond-forming reactions of polytopic, symmetric, and rigid monomers. Herein, we utilize the lone electron pair of the imine linkages as the function-determining moiety for a new series of second-generation of COFs. Although imine-based COFs are considered very accessible and versatile compounds, those are not stable in strong acid or strong base conditions. In order to improve the stability of imine-based COFs, the oxidation of imines to b-ketoemanime transformation has been studied. In the construction of second-generation of imine-based COFs, it is essential to maintain their functionality, crystallinity and porosity. The b-ketoemanime-based COFs have been maintained their crystallinity and porosity under strong acids and bases. In our studies, Py-BPy-b-lactam, Py-BPy-b-lactam and Py-1P-b-lactam COFs are newly studied for their structural maintain and chemical stability. Therefore, those newly synthesized b-lactam COFs also have studied for the conversion to thiolactam COFs to efficiently improve their application for the removal of Mercury. Thus, the molecules containing N and S atoms could greatly increases the density of Hg(II) coordination sites, thereby improving the metal affinity and adsorption capacity.
