Ozonation has been widely used in water/wastewater treatment for disinfection and organics oxidation.. To further improve the treatment efficiency of recalcitrant organic pollutants, ozone based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have also been extensively investigated. However, formation of toxic byproducts is one major limitation of AOPs. In particular, bromate, a possible carcinogen, may be formed due to the oxidation of bromide that exists ubiquitously in most environmental waters. In our previous studies, a novel ozone based AOP, plasmon-enhanced catalytic ozonation, has been developed for efficient removal of recalcitrant organics in various environmental matrices. In addition to successful degradation of the target organic pollutants, less bromate formation was observed during plasmon-enhanced catalytic ozonation as compared to catalytic ozonation and ozonation. Hence, here a comprehensive study was carried out to investigate the underlying mechanism of bromate formation inhibition. Specifically, comparative experiments under different conditions with different Br species (e.g. Br-, HOBr/OBr-, BrO3-), along with mass balance analysis and kinetics modeling were conducted to probe the formation/inhibition pathways of bromate and interactions between the Br species and ozone/catalysts/light irradiation.
