<br/><br/>Compounds in the liquid crystal phase can be reoriented by electric fields changing their optical properties. This leads to their primary commercial use in liquid crystal displays (LCD). Compared with commercial LCD switching, which occurs in milliseconds, ferroelectric switching occurs in microseconds and has been shown to occur in certain 1,2,4-oxadiazole-based liquid crystals. However liquid crystals with a 1,3,4-oxadiazole core have not yet shown this type of behavior.  We are investigating whether the incorporation of a highly polar lateral nitro group can induce this behavior in this class of compound. Another focus of this research is the addition of lateral methyl groups onto the structure to reduce the transition temperatures into the liquid crystal phase. The details of the synthesis and phase behavior will be discussed.
