We present a methodology based on employing highly interactive, 3-D multimedia for higher education courses related to materials science and chemistry. For this purpose, we create interactive, yet self-contained and easy-to-use lecture notes, exams and handbooks. The material developed can be accessed through standard pdf readers, which simplifies its use either in regular/online lectures or as support materials given to students to facilitate their study. Specifically, in subjects like crystallography and materials science, where visual inspection is crucial for system characterization this tool can be proven extremely useful to understand concepts such as symmetries, crystallographic classes, symmetry group elements etc. We have already implemented such a handbook to the course entitled “<i>Structure and Properties of Non-Metallic Materials</i>” of the school of industrial engineering in the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Spain). The material, when used in lecture presentations, allows for higher level of students' attendance, autonomous activity and participation increasing their engagement and motivation. Expanding the educational approach to a more active type of learning the material has been implemented in the framework of ‘flipped classroom’. With the help of these handbooks the students were able to provide explanatory videos for different type structures allowing autonomous study of the subject and peer-based education. The methodology can be easily adopted in a plethora of subjects in the syllabi of engineering, science, medical and biological schools.
