Seventy historical pigment samples were analyzed by XRD to create a spectra library in support of the Cultural Heritage Science Open Source (CHSOS) free Raman, FTIR and UV-Vis reflectance pigment database. X-ray diffraction (XRD) has been an up and coming resource for art evaluation in the past decade. XRD uses Bragg’s Law to determine the spacing between atoms which can be translated in a diffraction pattern that can reveal the crystal structure of a compound. The results of this study will assist art historians, conservators and archeologists confirm the chemical composition of cultural materials.
