The importance of hydrogen as a green and highly energy-dense fuel is evident. Hydrogen can help build a foundation for a sustainable future, where the economic development can be achieved through environmentally-friendly sources of energy. Among various methods of generating hydrogen, the electrocatalytic splitting of water is a promising approach. Given the slow kinetics of this reaction, there is need for highly active electrocatalysts to facilitate this process. We have explored several series of oxide electrocatalysts for hydrogen-evolution from water electrolysis, where the activities of catalysts are enhanced by judicious tuning of the structure. We have observed that it is possible to modify the crystal structures of multi-metal oxides, leading to the enhancement of electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen-evolution reaction. Importantly, these oxide materials comprise earth-abundant metals, which can lead to economical alternatives to the costly platinum-based catalyst that has been traditionally used for this process. The multi-metal oxide catalysts explored in our work are also highly stable and retain their catalytic activity for long duration during electrocatalytic hydrogen-evolution reaction.
