A massive amount of plastic waste has been generated in the environment, causing various types of pollution and social concern. To deal with this issue, pyrolysis has been used to recover useful resources from mixed waste plastics. However, due to the random cracking of mixed plastics contributing to the deterioration in product quality, adjusting the proper catalyst is crucial to improve product distribution. Here, we addressed this issue by utilizing a two-zone catalytic pyrolysis system under a CO2 atmosphere. First, activated carbon catalysts from spent coffee ground waste and tea waste were filled into the plastic pyrolysis zone. Subsequently, nickel-doped perovskite catalysts (LaxA1-xNiO3, A = Sr, Ca) and nickel-loaded Al2O3 and ZSM-5 catalysts were loaded into the catalytic zone. Results showed that the nickel-loaded activated carbons exhibited superior gas productivity due to the loaded transition metals as active points. We expect that these results can contribute to the sustainable production of waste-derived beneficial gas products through catalytic pyrolysis.
