<br/>Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) or frequency doubling is the process where two photons of light of the same frequency are combined in a non-linear optical (NLO) material to generate a single photon of twice the energy. The current standard NLO for second harmonic generation is an inorganic crystal known as BBO (barium borate, beta-BaB2O4). In the field of high intensity terahertz generation, recent work has demonstrated that single-crystalline organic materials with high hyperpolarizability are among the most efficient NLO materials. Our hypothesis is that these highly efficient organic NLO materials may provide new standards for SHG research as well, which would expand the capabilities of current SHG applications. In this report, we synthesize, crystalize, and then compare the efficiency of three of the most efficient organic NLO materials for SHG. We find that these organic materials are not only more efficient than BBO, they are also robust and represent attractive alternatives to current state of the art materials for SHG.
