While hydroxamic acids are most famous as constiuents of siderophores, they also form the basis of the interlinking connectivity that provides the stability for metallacrowns. In this presentation, we will describe the preparation of lanthanide containing luminescent metallacrowns that have high quantum yields and exceptional brightness in the Near Infrared Region. These compounds are easily functionalized and may be modified for the attachment of organic antenna or proteins. The potential applications of these for meausring temperature or cell imaging will be presented.
