Synthesis and purification of many coordination compounds traditionally involves a heavy amount of solvents. Mechanochemical synthesis allows for a solvent-free (or highly reduced amount of solvent) in the approach, and hence is much more environmentally responsible. Mechanical energy through grinding reactants together, either by hand or in a ball mill, produces many pure types of coordination compounds. The powder metal-porphyrin products obtained herein through mechanochemical synthesis attempts were characterized via nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, x-ray powder diffractometry (XRPD), infra-red (IR) spectroscopy, and Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy.
