Much of the land area of the middle states of the US is dedicated to agriculture and related industries. Many epidemiologic human health studies of pesticides are centered in the Midwest. Both statements are true. The epidemiology findings from studies of the Midwest have shaped many perspectives on pesticides and health. However, as researchers shift from the historical emphasis on farmers and pesticide applicators to focusing on moms and school kids, it’s time to review the assumptions and methods of these studies, past, present, and future. Well-designed epidemiology studies with robust methods to assess exposure can address questions related to pesticide use and human health. However, less rigorous approaches have the potential to reinforce misperceptions and misinformation.
