Novel biochemical assays have been developed at JBEI to quantify various biologically important molecules, such as glycans, aldehydes, methyl ketones, alcohols (C5 to C18 primary alcohols), lactones, acids etc. Different chemical probes are designed and synthesized to enhance nanostructure-initiator mass spectrometry (NIMS) based analysis. Especially, these assay methods can be easily extended to use the high throughput platforms we have built for screening cellulases and hemicellulases to significantly increase the throughput. We believe these mass spectrometry-based tools will enable us to rapidly discover high performance enzymes and cocktails relevant to biofuels research, and to identify biofuels’ strains with high titer products.
