This talk will present new results from our recently developed photonic voltmeter. Total potential and Stern layer structure will be presented for fused silica:water interfaces as a function of ionci strength, ion identity, and pH. Vibrational sum frequency generation spectra to probe hydrogen bonding strength in the Stern layer will be presented for a case where we overcame two strong absorber problems, namely the hematite:water interface. Implications for the electrical double layer at minera:water interfaces and the overpotential associated with the oxygen evolution reaction over hematite solar photoanodes will be discussed.
