In recent years, biologically active pharmaceutical and agrochemical products contain heteroatom-CF3 motifs. Especially common is the S(O)2CF3 motif, where n = 0,1,2. However, there are very few industrially relevant methods for accessing this motif and no mechanistic studies. Herein, we study the palladium catalyzed triflonation of aryl triflates and its limitations of use of sensitive aryl triflates, extreme dependence on the expensive RockPhos ligand, and lack of generalizability to other reactions. To investigate this, model complexes of the catalytic intermediates were isolated. Using these complexes, we conduct studies on the steps in this cycle. Further experiments on isolating the RockPhos products, as well as expanding to a more diverse set of ligands is underway.
