Light alkenes such as propylene (C3H6) are important building blocks for a large number of chemicals in the petrochemical industry. However, there is a discrepancy between the market demand and productivity. In addition to the steam cracking and fluid catalytic cracking, the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP) provides an alternative to fill the gap. Presently, oxygen (O2) has been widely used as an oxidant for ODHP; however, its strong oxidation potential causes over-oxidation to undesired carbon oxides (COx). To tackle this issue, CO2 has been used instead as a soft oxidant, because major advantages include suppressing the over-oxidation and ensuring the full utilization of carbon resource for sustainability. In this talk, I will show two cases using supported VOx catalysts for ODHP in purpose of achieving high selectivity and stability: O2-ODHP over VOx/BN and CO2-ODHP over VOx/In2O3. In the former case, we demonstrate how to couple gas-phase radical chemistry with surface reactions for efficient ODHP reaction. In the latter case, we focus on the interplays between acid-base interaction and redox property of VOx and In2O3 and their correlations with the catalytic performance for CO2-ODHP reaction.
