Well-rounded research and development needs more than solid science, it requires good storytelling.  Selecting appropriate analytical techniques can help tell a story that has meaning, leading to increased efficiency in the R&D process. Analytical chemistry departments are often seen as a “black box” producing discrete data points from which research conclusions can be drawn, but at the heart of every high-quality analytical chemist sits interdisciplinary information that is critical in forwarding research and development. When analytical chemists are involved in all facets of the process, they can leverage their knowledge of the strengths and limitations of various analytical techniques to drive decisions on the types of testing that will result in valuable data outputs. Real-world stories will be shared that showcase how we utilize this knowledge in method selection and modification for unique or unusual matrices, ramping up for in-house testing to reduce R&D time, combining the right methods of analysis and detection, and the importance of observation.
