Ionenes are a unique class of ion-containing polymers wherein the ionic group is anchored directly into the backbone of the repeating unit of the polymer. PEEK- and PEAS-like perarylated phosphonium ionenes can be prepared using nucleophilic aromatic substitution conditions whereby a perarylated phosphonium monomer can be coupled with a fluorinated electrophile. As part of this study, the changes in the phosphonium monomer architecture (substitution pattern, nature of the substituent, counteranion) were analyzed in terms of thermal properties (DSC, TGA). Several of these monomers were further polymerized and the resulting ionenes were evaluated for their thermal properties (such as Tg) as well as their thermal and chemical (caustic) stability. Several of the ionenes exhibited thermal stability of over 350 °C and were found to exhibit a high degree of chemical stability when soaked in 6 M NaOH solution for 48-hours, even at elevated temperature. Finally, conductivity values of the ionenes were determined by dielectric relaxation spectroscopy. Data has indicated a strong correlation between Tg and conductivity, the results of which will be presented.
