Agrochemical products, e.g., herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides, are formulations of active ingredients (AIs) that are designed to maximize the biological performance, improve applicator and ecological safety and to enhance product usability and applicability. However, many crop protection formulations exhibit stability issues of AIs and require careful selection of formulation types, and co-formulants to minimize the AI loss during formulation production, transportation, and storage. This presentation discusses the recent efforts at Corteva Agriscience to understand the stability challenges of various AIs in different agrochemical formulations that include chemical instability of AI via hydrolysis, chemical incompatibility of different AIs when present in one formulation, crystal growth of AI(s) and phase separation of AI phases. It is important to focus on understanding the instability mechanism and critical to develop methods to overcome the stability challenges. In some cases, stability challenges could be turned into product development opportunities, in which thorough data analysis and an open-minded approach could lead to a successful solution.
