Group 11 metal centers that are embedded in polydentate ligand scaffolds have attracted considerable interest within recent years, since they facilitate closed-shell metal MI…MI (d10…d10) interactions (M = Cu, Ag, Au). Copper is of particular interest because of its high abundance and low price in comparison to silver and gold. These multinuclear complex assemblies possess tunable electronic and luminescent properties for potential applications as building blocks for molecular/organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). Our concept is based on a series of new polydentate bis(amidines) with sterically protected alkylene backbones (n = 1, 2). These ligands undergo clean conversions with mesitylcopper to give highly luminescent multinuclear copper(I) clusters. Herein, we present a series of new polydentate bis(amidine) ligands and their homoleptic Cu(I) bis(amidinate) complexes.
