Attempts to introduce fluorine interstitials into metallic compounds using traditional fluorination methods typically results in decomposition and formation of ionic metal fluorides. We have found that metal flux reactions carried out in the presence of a fluorocarbon can produce intermetallic compounds containing fluoride anions. Reactions of various elements in a low melting lanthanum/nickel eutectic melt are heated in an atmosphere of CxFy; the thermal decomposition of the fluorocarbon and dissolution of the carbon and fluorine byproducts into the flux leads to formation of compounds such as La15(FeC6)4F2 and La3BC2F1.8. Their structures and properties will be discussed, as well as the comparison to related hydrides which can be formed from similar reactions carried out in the presence of hydrocarbons.
