Platinum group metal (PGM)-based heterogeneous catalysis has proven to be a clean and efficient approach to reducing toxic oxyanions (e.g., BrO3−, ClO3−, ClO4−, NO3−, and CrO42−). This presentation will first introduce an “instant” all-in-situ method to prepare supported PGM catalysts with any metal content. We will then discuss novel functionalities and activity enhancement by integrating various secondary metals. Our studies add to the fundamental understanding of the redox transformation of different transition metal species and their interaction with aqueous oxyanions. The findings also improve the cost-effectiveness of PGM catalysts, demonstrating the critical role of chemical innovations in environmental technology development.
