Extracting chemical data from literature through Text and data mining (TDM) has become one of the major approaches to obtain and curate large sets of machine-actionable data in chemistry. To identify a subset of scholarly publications on a specific research topic for TDM, researchers need to use metadata resources, preferably with discipline-specific subject indexing and API services. This presentation will overview several APIs of scholarly metadata resources available for chemists, including those ones openly available and subscription based. Some examples are TheLens API, Web of Science API Expanded, Scopus API, PubMed E-Utilities API, CrossRef API etc. We will compare the scope, source of metadata, depth of indexing, API access model to discuss the strength and limitations of the APIs. Metadata APIs from individual scholarly publishers will not be discussed. In addition, a couple of emerging TDM platforms that include metadata APIs, Constellate and ProQuest TDM Studio, will be explored for their potential applicability in chemistry research.
