Exchanges of reactive gases and aerosols between the land surface and atmosphere influence tropospheric chemistry, climate, and ecosystems. Dry deposition is an important yet overlooked and uncertain sink of many climate and pollution-relevant tropospheric constituents. Reactive gases and aerosols dry deposit after transport to the Earth’s surface via turbulence and removal from the atmosphere by reaction with or adherence to surfaces. Land surface functioning and properties (e.g., related to vegetation, soil) are key influences on the strength of dry deposition. In my talk, I will discuss how I use a hierarchy of models together with multiscale observations to identify (1) key processes and variations in dry deposition and (2) the importance of considering these key processes and variations in interpreting observed changes and building predictive ability of tropospheric constituents and impacts on ecosystems and climate. In particular, I will illustrate findings examining the impact of dry deposition on climate and air pollution using global earth system modeling, comparing dry deposition schemes from regional air quality models used for regulatory, forecasting, and planning purposes using observation-driven single point modeling, and probing the influence of turbulence-chemistry-forest interactions on canopy-atmosphere chemical fluxes using large eddy simulation.
