Current methods of carbon capture that involve the use of aqueous amines, or scrubbers, are often too harsh for idealized sequestration. In contrast, amine-functionalized solid-state materials show promise in capturing carbon dioxide directly from air. Permanently porous materials, like metal-organic frameworks, have proven their viability as carbon sinks with an ability to selectively adsorb a remarkable volume of carbon dioxide from flue gas streams. Porous molecular materials have unique advantages over their extended 3-D counterparts through an expansive library of ligand functionalization and solution processability. Exemplar of this are amine-functionalized porous coordination cages, which can enhance current techniques to offer a more efficient method of carbon capture. On top of being highly scalable, amine-functionalized cages are easily manipulated through ligand modification to tune overall charge and pore size, which aids in preferential binding. In particular, zirconocene quickly and reliably forms porous coordination cages with dicarboxylate ligands under quasi-aqueous, low-heat conditions. Heavily dependent on solvent and ligand shape, unique cage geometries are confirmed through mass spectrometry and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Subsequent carbon dioxide binding and cycling studies of these cages help determine their viability as carbon capture materials. Finally, while ligand functionalization of these coordination cages readily occurs before cage assembly, post-synthetic functionalization is currently being investigated.
