Safety instruction may be required as part of compliance with laws and regulations, an essential component of preparation for a career as a scientist or as a safety specialist, and relevant to personal interests and hobbies. Like many fields of instruction, approaches to safety topics vary with the setting, the goals, the constraints, and the participants. Discipline based education research provides theoretical frameworks and research tools that can aid with the investigation and illumination of effectiveness. As programs seek to maximize the impact of the resources available to promote safer science, broadening the investigation and evaluation of instructional approaches supports making more deliberate choices for positive outcomes.
