Bacterial infections are a serious health threat today. Actinomycete bacteria from soil are known to develop antimicrobial compounds to compete for resources. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the antibacterial activity of actinomycetes grown from soil samples and extract the antibiotic from a culture medium. Six soil samples were collected from the necropolis of an antient Roman village, Pollèntia, Mallorca, Spain, and grown on solid medium in petri dishes. Each sample was grown in six different agar cultures: starch, yeast, soil, rice, potato, and oatmeal. Of the 389 bacteria that were isolated, nine cultures were selected to grow on liquid medium. These cultures will be extracted to evaluate their antimicrobial compounds with Staphylococcus aureus, Pythium ultimum, and E coli.
