Traditionally introductory general chemistry is taught at the collegiate level in a two-semester sequence, often with a laboratory component accompanying each semester. At Binghamton, over 1000 students were enrolled in this track, as it served as the main chemistry pathway for most science, including the chemistry and biochemistry majors and pre-health/pre-professional majors in our liberal arts college. As part of our continued effort to improve students learning experience, we have recently made the transition from this two-semester course format to a two-lecture course, one-laboratory course format, with a laboratory component that is designed to be a course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE) course, in addition to what has become a two-semester, majors-only track. We will discuss here the intricacies and challenges of the transition, along with the impact that it has had on our students.
