An important form of chemical education is through the support of community groups, government agencies, and the press as they seek to understand and address local environmental issues that often have an important chemical component. This talk will cover the experiences and outcomes of ongoing work around the scientific data associated with several such issues, aimed at justice and equity in at-risk communities. For that reason, the work also has a strong advocacy component, including engagement with policymakers at the municipal, state, and federal level. Specific examples involving point source pollution in a state-designated environmental justice community will be discussed. The talk will also give examples of how the work impacts conventional university curricula in chemistry, pre-service teacher education, and humanities and social science.
