In this talk, efforts to develop chelators that are valuable the coordination of the heavy main group and f-block elements under aqueous conditions are described. The presentation gives an overview of new macrocyclic chelators, and their respective affinities for different metal ions within this class. Examples of chelators that exhibit unusual selectivity patterns for these metals are highlighted. Experimental data, in the form of X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy, in conjunction with computational studies are given to provide support for their metal ion-binding properties. Lastly, applications of these new chelators in the areas of nuclear medicine and metal ion separations are discussed.
