Catalyst-transfer polymerization is a controlled polymerization reaction that utilizes metal-catalyzed cross-coupling to propagate polymer chain growth. In this presentation, Suzuki-Miyaura catalyst-transfer polymerization will be discussed as applied to the preparation of structurally well-defined polyfluorene polymers and related systems. Specifically, we will focus on key mechanistic aspects of both the catalyst transfer process and transmetalation step in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction, with particular emphasis on the role of ligand structure in the transition metal catalyst.
