Being a part of the American Chemical Society has granted us, the FIU-BBC ACS Student Chapter, the ability to connect with and serve our surrounding communities using chemistry. Through service to the university and the community, the chapter has successfully provided a mutualistic relationship that benefits both student members and local communities. Despite the university community and the entire state’s recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, the chapter was able to continue to foster student growth, leadership, public speaking, professional skills, and scientific skills through the hosting of safe and organized events. Our mutual scientific interests are what fuels our chapter members to go into our neighborhoods and engage with as many people possible. We host a variety of events that include volunteering, professional development seminars, and tabling to maximize the reach to our audience, regardless of any major or background. In the past year, the chapter has enriched its members and community with collaborations alongside FIU, the university’s College of Arts, Sciences, and Education (CASE), FIU student organizations such as (MAPS) Minority Association of Pre-Health Students (MAPS), and Society for Women in Marine Science (SWMS), and non-profit community organizations such as South Florida ACS Local Section, the local section’s Young Chemists Committee (YCC), Yeru Stem Education, and Fab Labs Miami. Many members of our chapter, coming from minority backgrounds, understand firsthand the lack of resources available within the county’s school system. Therefore, we have prioritized inspiring the next generation of scientists in underserved schools throughout South Florida by creating scientific activities and donating educational materials provided by the ACS. The chapter participates in tabling at the Frost Museum of Science and the Museum of Discovery and Science for National Chemistry Week (NCW) to continue to reach and enrich young minds. The chapter is collaborating with Fab Labs Miami to distribute ACS NCW materials from previous years to underserved schools in the community.
