Residue accumulation in crops could occur after multi-year use of persistent and systemic pesticides and/or major soil metabolites. It is required to be considered in the rotational crop studies by the OECD guidance on residues in rotational crops. Rotational crop tests and residue accumulation are generally not required for permanent or semi-permanent crops (e.g., pome fruits, stone fruits, tree nuts, citrus fruits, etc). However, for persistent and systemic pesticides and/or major soil metabolites, residues in permanent and semi-permanent crops could increase after multi-year applications. In these situations, the regular magnitude of residue study (MOR) design may not reflect the worst-case residues in permanent and semi-permanent crops. The resulting residue data may not be representative for maximum residue limits (MRLs) establishment and dietary risk assessment. This presentation will discuss the possible study designs to capture the worst-case residues in permanent and semi-permanent crops for persistent and systemic pesticides after multi-year applications. It will be illustrated with a real pesticide example recently registered globally.
