Climate change adaptation requires a rapid shift in water resource management paradigms. Both developed and developing countries are expected to face increasing water security issues, with projections showing that by 2025, two-thirds of the world’s population will confront water scarcity issues. Today, more than 730 million people live in countries with high and critical levels of water stress. Unfortunately, centralized, investment-intensive water management systems that predominate the developed world may not be viable for developing countries. Urban water management systems are receiving increased scrutiny in response to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6): ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. At current rates, it is projected that 1.6 billion people will still lack access to "safely managed" drinking water in 2030. Solutions that focus on emerging resource management plans for water management include water reuse, source separation, and home water treatment and storage. Emerging paradigms include decentralized water systems and ecosystem-based approaches to reintroduce a more natural state of hydrologic systems. Research and policy effort are crucial to a sustainable water future. This talk assesses water resource management actions by both developing and developed countries presented at the UNFCCC 27th annual Conference of Parties (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.
