The National Research Council’s glycoscience roadmap, “Transforming Glycoscience: A Roadmap to the Future”, published in 2012, recognized a general lack of understanding among students and non-experts of the significance of glycoscience. The roadmap stated 5- and 10-year goals for glycoscience education to increase public and professional awareness. Within 5 years, glycoscience lecture materials and hands-on activities were to be integrated into high school, undergraduate, and graduate science curricula wherever needed and appropriate. Within 10 years, glycoscience was to be taught at every level of the education system and appropriate test questions were to be included in standardized testing (e.g., SAT, GRE, MCAT, and Medical Board Exams). This presentation aims to provide an overview over current glycoscience education efforts and activities in the U.S., ranging from K-12 learning experiences to short courses for professionals. The larger goal is to create a network of glycoscience educators to foster collaboration and increase the impact of our collective efforts to raise glycoscience awareness and literacy.
