Chemistry laboratories are highly hazardous environments, and academic institutions are increasingly expected to take an active role in promoting safety within these complex workplaces.  Safety trainings, inspections, and other institutionalized programming are gaining traction nationwide.  Meanwhile, chemical safety is increasingly formalized in undergraduate and graduate education.  However, there are limited evidence-based tools to help institutions understand the impacts of such programming on the resulting behaviors and environments that their chemists work in.  This presentation will report on the development of an instrument designed to infer the safety behavior of chemistry graduate students and to connect those behaviors to the institutional structures in place for laboratory safety.  Use of this instrument may assist institutions in optimizing their resources by tailoring educational programming and administrative structures for their local context.
