The ability of main-group compounds, particulary of phosphorus-based, to mimic transition metal behaviour in activation of small molecules and their use in catalysis has recently gained a lot of attention. One of the appraches to make PIII-center capable of activating small molecules in a metallomimetic fashion is to geometrical constrain it and as a result distort it from its typical geometry. In our group in addition to the geometrical constriction of the PIII-center a positive charge is introduced to the molecule making it more reactive. In this talk, I will present our group's recent progress in the synthesis, structure and reactivity of novel geometrically constrained phosphenium cations with small molecules and their use in catalysis.
