Cross-linked ion gels that incorporate substantial amounts of ionic liquid are of interest because of their potential in CO2 sequestration from gas mixtures. Ionic liquids of interest include anions such as bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide (Tf2N), trifluoromethanesulfonate (OTf), and dicyanamide (DCA). This work presents the preparation and characterization of photo-curable elastomers capable of holding up to 50 wt% ionic liquid. Specifically, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide ([EMIM][DCA]), 2-[[(butylamino)carbonyl]oxy]ethyl acrylate (BACOEA) monomer, 1,6-hexanediol dimethacrylate crosslinker, and 2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyldiphenyl phosphine oxide (TPO) initiator were used to formulate a continuous phase, 3D-printable resin. Thermal analysis using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that the thermal properties of the 3D-printed ion gels are not significantly impacted crosslinking density but are heavily dependent on the weight percent of ionic liquid incorporated into the gel. In addition, scanning electron microscopy as well as CO2 sorption experiments of BACOEA/[EMIM][DCA] ion gels show that both the film morphology and CO2 sorption are also heavily dependent on the percent incorporation of [EMIM][DCA]. Future work on these new crosslinked materials includes viscoelastic and electrochemical characterization as well as characterization of the mechanical properties to ascertain the utility of these unique ion gels in sensing applications.
