Within recent decades antibiotic resistance has become a growing concern. With even last resort treatments becoming futile, progress in recognizing and countering antibiotic resistance is necessary. Immense knowledge in understanding antibiotic resistance has been gained, especially in understanding the genetic basis. Genes lead to resistance and are from gene transfer and mutations. Due to this, new resistance genes can arise. Finding these unknown resistance genes is the first step to countering resistance. Understanding the function these genes provide is essential not only for awareness, but also for developing new treatment options. The research done focuses on finding potentially novel resistance genes in <i>Salmonella enterica</i> isolates through a comparison of genomes. Isolates that have been previously found to have resistance with no known resistance gene were used. The computational programs Trimmomatic, SPAdes, PROKKA, and Roary were used to compare these unusually resistant isolates with susceptible isolates to determine what made the resistant isolates unique. 17 potentially novel resistant genes were determined. One resistant isolate was compared against 669 susceptible isolates, and another 2 resistant isolates were compared against 237 susceptible isolates. The predicted gene fragments resulting were then further analyzed through BLAST to determine potential for a novel resistance gene to eventually test in the laboratory.
