A series of polymer materials were developed to interact with SARS-CoV-2 and other enveloped viruses. These polymer networks were slid materials that contain surfactant styrene maleic acid derivative polymers that disrupt lipids forming disc like particles. In the case of networks containing these styrene maleic acid based poylmers they can disrupt lipids in less than 1 minute, outperforming soluble surfactants such as triton based surfactants. The lipid disrupting materials were also capable of capturing the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2. The materials could be used for at least 5 cycles of lipid disruption with minimal loss of performance and they could be adhered to both solid substrates and filter like materials.
